Óir na Farraige
In 2022, Simply Blue Group (SBG) embarked on an ambitious journey to explore the potential of seaweed cultivation as a sustainable source of protein. This strategic initiative, named Óir na Farraige, reflects our commitment to expanding beyond traditional renewable energy projects and harnessing the multifaceted benefits that seaweed farming offers. Our goal is to innovate and diversify our offerings, while simultaneously contributing to environmental stewardship and the fight against climate change.
Óir na Farraige is more than just a project; it is a strategic vision that aligns with Simply Blue Group’s broader mission to drive sustainable development. Recognizing the growing demand for sustainable food sources and the environmental benefits of seaweed cultivation, we have identified this venture as a key business opportunity. Seaweed farming not only provides a sustainable source of protein but also contributes to carbon sequestration, enhances marine biodiversity, and supports the development of a circular economy.
Collaboration and Innovation
In 2023, SBG formed Óir na Farraige with the intention of establishing offshore seaweed farms. This initiative is being pursued in parallel with our collaboration with North Sea Farms and Vattenfall, supported by Amazon, to install the first seaweed farm within a wind farm in Q3 2024. The integration of seaweed farming within offshore wind farms represents a pioneering approach that leverages existing infrastructure to maximize environmental and economic benefits. Through this collaboration, Óir na Farraige is gaining invaluable insights that will inform the development of our own seaweed farming operations.
Pioneering Offshore Seaweed Farming
Óir na Farraige is poised to lead the way in offshore seaweed farming with the development of two pioneer sites in Galway Bay. From 2025 to 2030, we will establish and operate these the sites to prove the business model for large-scale seaweed production. These sites will serve as a testing ground for refining our cultivation techniques and demonstrating the commercial viability of seaweed farming at an industrial scale. Our focus will be on supplying the bio-refining and food production sectors, both of which are expected to see significant growth in demand for sustainable, seaweed-derived products.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The development of Óir na Farraige is a testament to SBG’s commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation. By investing in seaweed farming, we aim to create a sustainable financial return while also making a positive impact on the planet. Seaweed farming has the potential to play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and providing a renewable source of protein that can reduce reliance on traditional agriculture.
